The Importance of Omega 3 for your growing children - Jivo Wellness

For children to develop mentally and physically, parents must ensure that they get the right nutrition. In their growing years, it is necessary that they be given important supplements, such as Omega 3 essential fatty acids which improve the functioning of the brain and nervous system, eyesight, immune system, heart health, intelligence, behaviour and moods.

In fact, more than 90% of children don’t get enough of Omega 3 in their daily diet, leading to problems in reading and writing, among other developmental problems. This is why Omega 3 supplements are in great demand these days.

Introducing Omega 3:

Omega 3 comprises fatty acids such as DHA, ALA and EPA. The body extracts ALA acids from the food we eat and converts it into DHA and EPA, both important parts of our cell membranes that give directions to body’s nerve systems. For the body to remain strong and healthy, Omega 3 is very necessary.

Why Omega 3 is necessary for children:

DHA:
Of the three acids contained in Omega 3, DHA is the most important. It is important for eye and brain development and correct function right through life, but is extremely important for the infant, from age two years. Up to the age of five years, the mass of the child’s brain increases 3.5 times, so he needs enough of DHA in his diet to help with eye development and brain growth. It also helps the child develop a strong and healthy heart.

ALA:
This provides sufficient energy to complete our work for the day, and helps s maintain healthy and smooth complexion.

EPA:
This develops the heart muscles and reduces chronic inflammations, and is therefore vital in a child’s growing years.

Where Omega 3 is available:

Omega 3 is naturally available in green, leafy vegetables. ALA is available in walnuts, flax oil, wheat germ and canola oil. EPA and DHA are available in tuna, sardines, herring, mackerel, trout and any such oily cold water fish.

Canola Oil seems to be the most easily adaptable in diet since not many dietary habits need to be changed to switchover to Canola Oil. Any parent wanting his or her children to develop good vision, mental sharpness and good hand-eye coordination, should give them Omega 3 every day in their diet right through their growing years. If your children have enough reserves of Omega 3, they will be good sportsmen, of sharp memories, be better behaved and will excel in academics too.
